Release: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Martha Wilson and Betsey Gallagher June 17, 1996 FRANKLIN FURNACE Announces a 20th Anniversary Exhibition: VOYEUR'S DELIGHT An Interactive Exhibition Opening September 6, from 6-8 pm and continuing through October 12, 1996 Gallery Hours: 12-6, Tuesday to Saturday Located at 112 Franklin Street, New York, NY 10013 ph: (212) 925-4671 - email ffurnace@interport.net Barbara R. Rusin and Grace Roselli, the curators of Voyeur's Delight, announce artists, and a panel discussion in conjunction with their exhibit which opens the 20th Anniversary season of Franklin Furnace, September 6, 1996. Voyeurism in received, or perceived, as a collection of controversial ideas that intensify gender-assigned roles. These roles are defined, refined and elaborated, and influence our psychological, social and sexual lives. "Voyeur's Delight" is an interactive, multimedia exhibit that explores voyeurism within the context of cultural conservatism and gender politics. The show suggests that voyeurism is idiosyncratic to the human condition, an integral part of society that is altered as a society is altered. The exhibit and panel will examine the social power of "looking," ranging from a clinical pathological definition postulating voyeurism as a perversion (one in which men are primarily implicated) to participatory voyeuristic pleasures as a prime aspect of a media culture. It will evaluate current practices of voyeurism through numerous mediums. Highlights include a sexuality in which gender roles are examined through technologies best able to fasten themselves to voyeurism, that is, those technologies that distance the voyeur from the object he or she is watching; video, film, and still photography are foremost. Of utmost interest, however, in this inquiry is cyberspace; electronic space may well be the ultimate detached voyeur medium, allowing the freedom of any gender, or combination of genders, instantaneously and anonymously. "New Observations," the noted non-profit contemporary art journal, will devote its September 1996 publication to the show. The issue, in addition to documenting the show, will include essays on voyeurism as a cultural phenomenon in transition. The artists in "Voyeur's Delight" are Michel Auder, Dike Blair, Molly Blieden, Sophie Calle, Jane Dickson, Tessa Hughes-Freehand and Ela Troyano, Janine Gordon, Shelagh Keeley, Susan Leopol, Ariane Lopez-Huici, Robin Lowe, Juilana Lueching, Linda Montano, Aimee Morgana, Joseph Nechvatal, Barbara Pollock, Julia Scher, Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt, Sarah Schwarts, Andrea Scrima, Chrysanne Stathacos, Jocelyn Taylor, Maciej Toporwicz, Chuck Yuen, and Jeff Ansencio, the artist known as DK. Panelists and essayists include Ian Grey, Dr. Danielle Knafo, Alan Sondheim, and four artists from the show, Jane Dickson, Aimee Morgana, Joseph Nechvatal, and Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt. Detailed descriptions of installations selected for "Voyeur's Delight," and information on its curators, artists and essayists is available on request from Franklin Furnace. |
